Beanfield's network is different - It's better. Here's why:

Our Metro access network is built using a unique "2 POP" design. Our Toronto network has 2 major metro Points of Presence (POPs), on opposite sides of the city. Each of these POPs can operate independently, and are fully capable of running the entire city by themselves.

There are a minimum of 2 high-count fibre-optic cable routes between these two POPs. These cable routes wind their way through the city, never crossing each other, and provide connectivity to buildings along their route.

Each building is connected to both of these POPs, with active equipment in each building maintaining a relationship with both at all times. If a connection goes down, or an entire POP is lost, the traffic is automatically re-routed to the other POP where it is processed and sent on to its final destination. This all happens without the customer noticing that anything happened.

For over a hundred years, telecommunication companies have been building networks that radiate out from a central office. This design harkens back to the days when all phone lines had to run back to an operator's switchboard. These central offices are well built, but they allow a single point of failure to affect large numbers of lines. If a customer happens to be located some distance from the central office, there can be kilometers of cable between the two. A failure anywhere along the cable route can cause a customer’s lines to go down until repairs can be made.

This situation is made even worse when you purchase service from a "reseller" or "wholesaler" who purchases services from the telephone company. While some of these resellers may boast redundancy in their networks, their infrastructure is often located in a building that is connected to the phone company over a single cable, which in turn is connected to you. When this connection fails anywhere along the line, you are left without service.

Peering, Connectivity, & Policies:

The Beanfield network is designed to provide you with the fastest and most reliable connections possible. Our routing policy is designed to choose the highest quality and fastest connection to any destination, not simply the network that offers the cheapest rates. We connect our network to as many other networks as possible. The closer you are to other networks, the faster and more reliable your service will be. Between our peering and transit relationships, we are directly connected to every major cable company and telecommunications company across Canada.

Here is a summary of our peering and connectivity in each of our POPs:
